Quota Attainment

Quota Attainment doesn't just measure whether the sales team works well. It first measures whether the quota assigned to them was realistic to begin with.

If 95% of the team hits quota, the problem isn't the reps' skill. It's that nobody set a sufficiently ambitious target.

What the distribution reveals, not just the average

An average quota attainment of 70% can hide two very different situations: a normal distribution where most reps are close to target, or a bimodal distribution where a few reps far exceed quota and many miss it badly.

The second situation almost always signals a territory design or lead distribution problem, not individual competence: unbalanced territories generate unbalanced results regardless of who works them.

Formula del Quota Attainment =
Number of Sales Reps Meeting or Exceeding Quota
Total Number of Sales Reps with an Assigned Quota

Anti-patterns

Common mistake: setting quotas based solely on the revenue growth desired by the board, without validating them against the funnel's real capacity to generate sufficient pipeline for each rep.

Second mistake: comparing quota attainment across reps with territories of very different size and maturity, penalizing those working new or less developed territories compared to those inheriting established accounts.

Practical Application

Of 18 account executives with an assigned quota, 6 meet or exceed it: a 33.3% quota attainment, well below the healthy 60-75% benchmark. Analyzing the distribution, the 6 reps hitting quota all work established enterprise territories, while the 12 below quota work newly opened territories: the problem is in territory planning, not team capability.
