Brand Advocacy

Brand advocacy is not a customer leaving a positive review. It's a customer willing to put their own professional reputation on the line to convince a peer to trust you.

A customer reference willing to take a 20-minute call with a prospect is worth more than any case study written by your marketing team.

Why it must be built, not waited for

Satisfied customers rarely volunteer spontaneously as references: they must be identified (high CLV, positive sentiment, mature product usage) and explicitly invited to join a structured program, with clear benefits for their time (early feature access, visibility in their industry, networking).

A mature advocacy program maintains an updated reference pool by industry and use case, allowing sales to activate the right reference at the right moment in the sales cycle, instead of desperately searching for an available customer at the last minute.

Anti-patterns

Common mistake: asking for a customer reference only at the critical moment of an ongoing negotiation, when the customer hasn't been prepared or incentivized in advance, often getting a refusal or lukewarm availability.

Second mistake: limiting advocacy to written reviews on public platforms, ignoring the much higher value of a direct conversation between an existing customer and a prospect in the same industry.

Practical Application

A company builds an advocacy program with 22 customers selected for CLV and sentiment, available for reference calls organized within 48 hours. In enterprise deals where a reference is activated, win rate rises from 24% to 43% and the sales cycle shortens by an average of 3 weeks compared to deals without an activated reference.
