Ad Frequency

Ad frequency doesn't measure how present you are. It measures the exact point where presence stops building trust and starts building annoyance, a line different for every audience and every message.

In a B2B audience of a few thousand decision-makers, the tenth exposure to the same ad in the same week doesn't reinforce the message. It turns it into irritation.

Otto GTM Observatory

Why B2B reaches ad fatigue faster

In B2B, where ad audiences are often restricted to a few thousand or tens of thousands of relevant decision-makers, available budget tends to generate a higher per-person exposure frequency than B2C campaigns on much larger audiences. This means the point of diminishing returns, beyond which each additional exposure stops reinforcing the message and starts generating annoyance, is reached much faster.

Monitoring average frequency together with cost per result allows distinguishing between a physiological frequency increase, due to a narrow audience already saturated with constant budget, and a problematic frequency coinciding with performance deterioration, a signal of real ad fatigue.

Anti-patterns

Common mistake: maintaining the same budget and creative set on a narrow B2B audience for weeks, ignoring the rising average frequency leading to progressive deterioration of CTR and cost per result.

Second mistake: reacting to rising frequency by simply cutting the budget, instead of introducing new creative variants that allow continuing to reach the same audience with a message perceived as fresh.

Practical Application

A company keeps the same ad creative on a LinkedIn audience of 8,000 decision-makers for 5 weeks. Average frequency rises from 2.1 to 7.8 exposures per person, while CTR drops from 2.4% to 0.6% and cost per MQL triples. Introducing three new creative variants in rotation and capping maximum frequency at 4 weekly exposures per user, CTR recovers to 2.1% and cost per MQL returns close to the initial level.
